Some dude is dumping every song ever done, ever, as karaokie ( only a
slight exaggeration ) on some other group. I've been looking at the
titles. Light goes on over my head ... I not only don't know a lot of
these songs, I've never even heard of the artists.
two things ...
- there is far too much music being produced. No wonder the artists say
they can't make any money.
- also, most of it, the songs themselves, are crap.
my head is hurting just looking at the lists. In the old days, I'd
have grabbed every midi of every song that showed up. Now, I don't even
want these karaokie versions. Yeah, they are in audio format and
that's part of it. Unlike midi files there's nothing much I can learn
from these things. If I want to spend a few days learning some so so
guitar or keyboard part, I can just listen to the original record.
At least with some of the better midi format files, I might maybe learn
something from how it's done / put together. Actual karaokie files,
pretty much useless for learning.
Songs come and go so quickly, if it takes any time at all to learn
them, why bother ? By the time we could have a new / on the charts
song doable for the band ( about a week ), it'll be yesterdays news
anyway. Ha, again a slight exaggeration, but not much.
No, the only reason to learn covers, for us, is if we like the songs.
Otherwise, like Ouise points out, they are ... old stale boring ....
or, if we're talking about modern " country " ..... I'll take what Tom
Petty called it " bad rock with a fiddle ".
If we were kids, working in bars, then maybe it'd be worth the time
learning the new " country ". But we're not, and the drive to do that
is long, long gone. I know, because we had that once, did that scene
for many years. Past that now.
Am I burning out ? From the tone of my posts lately, it kinda sounds
like it. Here's the thing, band girl just told me ( over phone )
that in addition to my weekday solo and our duo stuff, we have every
saturday booked from now to mid summer sometime. Every freekin'
saturday for months out ..... That might sound great, but it comes at a
cost. Like, I have to play these songs we learn, and frankly, I'm
getting pretty tired of some of them. Looking for new songs and
finding really lame modern country, I can't even begin to dredge up any
enthusium for that crap. In the past, I might think, hey, learn these
and I'll get gigs and be out playing, making money and partying. We'll,
that's not a carrot anymore, as we have all the work we can do, and
partying isn't the lure it once was :-)
I need to find some other motivation, something past working a lot .. :-)
Buying new gear doesn't even excite me anymore. It's all the same, meet
the new gear, same as the old gear ( boss ). Thinking some new piece
of kit will make us sound better, well, maybe, but generally if you
think that, you're kidding yourself. Getting better takes work, not a
charge card :-)
